I have a route! It is quite a long route and I chose this because if there are parts of the country that don’t interest you it is possible to remove them without to much difficulty.
We will be flying into Washington DC, although there are cheaper flights to other destinations in America such as New York because of city breaks it works out that it is not beneficial because of the extra mileage in driving. Of course if you decide that you are going to remove some parts of the route then it may work out better but for me it is best to fly into DC.
From Washington DC we drive up to Philadelphia, stopping at Atlantic City on the way if it takes your fancy, before ending up in New York. Continuing up the coast we go to Boston before heading inland to see the Niagara Falls. Some of you may have been to Canada before but I have never visited and it seems a shame to be standing on the border and not cross over, so we cross over into Canada and drive to Toronto before heading back down through another border into Detroit. We continue going inland to Chicago (it may even be possible to get a boat from Detroit to Chicago) before turning south and driving the long way to Florida. On the way to Florida we stop off in Nashville, Atlanta, and possibly Jacksonville depending on how we are feeling. Obviously there will be more stop-offs, sleep is necessary, but these are the main points for the journey. Now we are in Florida we can head along the west coast stopping when we feel like it until we end up in Miami. Coming back through Florida we drive on the opposite coast with a stop in Tampa Bay. The next leg of the journey is quite long taking us all the way around the coast to New Orleans and then carrying on to Houston. At Houston we head north for a little bit until we reach Dallas. At this point it can be decided whether you want to carry on north a little further and visit Oklahoma or turn west and carry on to Phoenix. Either way the next major destination is Phoenix with a possible stop in Albuquerque for a night if coming from Oklahoma. From Phoenix we end up on the west coast of America in San Diego were we can head north again to Los Angeles, The Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. Driving further into Nevada we can go for a quick (well if a few thousand kilometres is quick!) stop in Salt Lake City before completing the arc and finishing for a rest in San Francisco. If we want to we can then carry on north to Portland and Seattle, possibly even crossing the border again into Canada and flying home from Vancouver.
This is a long trip but covers most areas of the US that you may want to visit and for those of you who won’t be coming with me it is easy to modify and cut out large chunks of driving. The only problem could be in crossing the borders into Canada and back depending on how the American immigration is working at the time.
In the next post I shall start to look at the things that are to see in each destination, how long you may want to stay there and how long it will take to drive to the next destination.
