I was wondering to myself today how I decide where to go when I go travelling. This thought was sparked when I was out with some friends the other day and they were discussing which country they were going to visit on their next holiday. I don’t think that I have ever really thought about this before.
For as long as I can remember I have had a private policy that if somebody asked me to join them travelling or to visit them while they were abroad then I would never say no. Sometimes of course I had to back out as I couldn’t afford the flights. The cost of flights is usually the only reason why I do not go on a trip but over the years I have managed to make most of them.
It is amazing how this simple idea can get you to places that you may never have been to before. Just looking at the last few months when I was in Mexico has found me three invitations. While I was in the hospital in Mexico City the two doctors who were getting me fit invited me back. One of them had a house in the country where Emilio Zapata’s family were living and he was actually good friends with them. The other would go with a couple of friends into the forests on mules with a guide before leaving the mules and then trekking into unexplored jungle. Of course these journeys may not suit everyone but what an opportunity. Mark has also invited me over to India for the tiger tracking. Different adventures I have been invited on for next year include Las Vegas, Turkey and Malta.
All of this means that I never really have to think of where to go as there is always a great choice of possibilities. Admittedly most of these trips are not luxury holidays but more on the adventurous side. Luxury holidays always seem a bit easier to plan though because almost every country has an area to go if you want luxury.
I understand that as a freelancer it is much easier for me to go abroad and travel that if you are in a full time job. If you make a New Years resolution to always say yes if somebody invites you abroad then you will be amazed at the possibilities that appear.
